‘Pietà’ seeks to represent a careful look at Michelangelo’s sculpture found in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The immense possibility of interpretations arises from reading the poem of the same name by Rainer Maria Rilke, which brings a different light to the sculpture. The cycle revealed in the unnatural proportions of Jesus and Mary, intertwining life and death in a single image, along with the meticulous details that eternalize this moment in an almost organic way, were sufficient to embrace an attempt to translate these discoveries into sounds. Here, the artist uses samples from Leonin’s “Viderunt Omnes” (Gregorian chant based on Psalm XCVII and sung at Christmas Masses) while delving into the research of Gestural Music (an investigation of non-structures based on brief movements), in order to reflect the multiplicity of reactions from a hypothetical first encounter with the sculpture.
